How do I choose between wedding photography styles

Photojournalistic (documentary) style

Photographers observe and capture genuine moments without heavy direction. You get candid reactions, real emotions, and a narrative flow. This works well if you dislike posing, want natural images, and value authenticity. It requires a skilled photographer to consistently find good moments and angles, you can't rely on poses to fix composition.

Fine art or editorial style

Photographers compose deliberately, work with light carefully, and create highly stylized images. You get polished, artistic results with specific aesthetics, think cinematic color grading or dramatic lighting. This appeals to couples who want gallery, quality prints and aren't bothered by directed posing. It often requires specific locations and good weather.

Traditional or classic style

Photographers prioritize formal poses, family groupings, and conventional moments, first dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss. You get predictable, timeless images that work well in albums. This style suits couples who want comprehensive coverage of expected moments and don't mind structured posing.

Hybrid approach

Most modern photographers blend styles: some directed posing for formals and key moments, plus candid coverage throughout. This balances getting your must, haves with capturing genuine moments. Ask directly what your photographer's ratio is and which style dominates their work.
